As we know, there is nothing more useful than social networks for many things and learning a language is one of those things where they can help us a lot.
Apart from reading the posts on your favorite English speaking social media accounts and then spending hours reading English comments from their audience, there are many other ways in which social networks help you improve your English.
One of these ways is to follow accounts of English teachers who have Instagram or Facebook accounts. On those social networks we post very useful content so that, for free, everyone can improve their English. These posts are oriented sometimes to improve your grammar, sometimes to increase your vocabulary and sometimes to improve your intonation and pronunciation.
From now on and completely free of charge you can follow me on Instagram or Facebook and start learning a bit and at your own pace at @janiceenglishteacher.
Even if you consider your level of English to be very low, never be afraid to post a comment on teachers’ social networks. No one expects these comments to be well written since you are obviously not writing in your own language. Moreover, these comments are very useful because they guide us about what is the type of future post we should create to better reach our audience and to help them further addressing what they really need.
As I talked about in the article where I recommended reading, social networks allow us to follow many people, and people tend to follow people who publish in their language, but starting from today I invite you to follow all those who may interest you and who publish everything in English. Characters as disparate as Elon Musk, Taylor Swift, Boris Johnson, Lewis Hamilton, Bill Gates, Kathy Wood; in short, there is no limit when it comes to accounts of English-speaking or non-English-speaking characters who post in English, and you can thus read in English every time you open your Twitter, your Instagram or your TikTok.
The same goes for YouTube. I know, I know. I know that on a thousand occasions you’ve solved a problem thanks to a tutorial in your language that has taught you how to fix a faucet, dye your hair, seal tile joints with silicone, fix a problem with your computer, exercise at home or make cook ribs with potatoes, and that you’re going to keep doing it for survival. However, you also have at your disposal a whole universe of content in English that could offer you information that in other languages might not be available for whatever reason, and it’s also a great way to improve your English. Don’t forget that YouTube has the option of captions (cc), if you don’t want to suffer too much or if your level of English is still not very good. In this sense, on YouTube you will find documentaries on economics (I recommend you look for Ray Dalio), international politics, history, philosophy, psychology, celebrities, and anything else you can think of.
If you manage to get hooked on a youtuber and/or twitter account, you will find yourself consuming hours of content in English without so much effort because now it’s more a hobby than just homework. This time wasted, which often defines the time we spend on social networks, in this case is wasted in English so you are no longer wasting time because you are learning. It is a way to turn around the addiction that social networks produce. In this case, you make the addiction somehow play in your favor.
I hope you find these suggestions helpful. All this would be enough to give your English a boost, but if you also feel like it and can afford to take a class, contact me and we’ll set up a class as soon as possible. Good luck in your progress!
